Did you know that...
Venice's greatest art museum, the Accademia Gallery, was founded to counter the dispersion of the city's art heritage after the suppression of monasteries, churches and guilds under Napoleonic and Austrian rule. The Accademia's attention is now focused on the city as a whole, and on the locations for which its collections were originally created, where other, equally important, masterpieces are still housed. A permanent scheme, Venice from museum to city, has been set up to make these locations - and especially the churches and guilds - as accessible as possible to visitors, by providing the necessary facilities and back-up services, including new information and scientific equipment, trained staff, and a new lighting and security system.
