The twelfth of May 1797, for the last time, the
Main Council met in order to accept the requests claimed.The doge Lodovico Manin, standing up for the last time from his high-backed chair, prayed the Main Council to give its approval to Napoleonic "part" while they were threatened if they didn’t accept their requests. In this way that day was decided the inglorious end of the Serenissima.
On the sixtieth of May, with the excuse of maintaining the order during the transfer of the instructions between the old and the new government, 4.000 French soldiers paraded in St. Mark’s square that, for the first time in its history, was invaded by foreign troops.
